Masako Katsura was an interesting and accomplished woman. Born in 1913 in Japan, she became a renowned billiard player before moving to the United States in the late 1940s. As first lady of the sport, she brought attention to the importance of physical activity and healthy living and even established a national championship for women’s billiards. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 86 years old.
Masako Katsura: Billiard Player
In 1924, Tokyo’s first lady Masako Katsura won gold at the world billiard championships. She quickly became a household name, becoming known as Japan’s ‘Miss Billiards.’ In 1927 she married Nobuyuki Katsura, and the couple moved to Nagoya, where Masako started a successful billiard school.
She was also an accomplished player, winning international tournaments and earning her nickname ‘The Female Einstein’ for her ability to calculate and play difficult shots quicker than anyone else. Her skills helped push Japanese women’s billiards to new heights; in 1949, she won the World Championship for Women aged just 25 years old.
After retiring from competition in 1951, Masako served as Nagoya’s first lady until she died in 1992. She was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Japan’s highest honor for civilians, and is considered one of Japan’s most celebrated cultural icons.
How did Masako Katsura Became First Lady of Billiard?
Masako Katsura is best known as the first lady of billiard and for her role in leading Japan during its postwar reconstruction. Katsura was born in Hiroshima on October 15, 1919, to a ruling elite family. Her grandfather had been the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, and her father was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Despite her privileged background, Katsura became interested in billiards early and began playing competitively at 18.
Katsura’s skills quickly caught the attention of Josef Dobrowski, one of the world’s leading billiards players at the time. Dobrowski invited Katsura to join him on a tour of Europe, where she would compete against some of the sport’s top players. Upon returning to Japan, Katsura entered the professional competition and soon emerged as one of its leading stars.
In 1951, after years of speculation about who would take over following the death of Emperor Hirohito, Masako Katsura was elected as Japan’s first female vice president. The following year she was elected as Japan’s first female president and served until 1954. During her time as president, Katsura led Japan through a period of turmoil after World War II; she played a pivotal role in facilitating diplomatic negotiations with Korea, China, and other surrounding nations while also rebuilding infrastructure and economy.
Following her time as first lady, Katsura continued to play competitively; she won several international tournaments and remained popular among fans.
